In North Macedonia, young people live in the same cities, but often in parallel realities. Language, ethnicity, gender, school, neighborhood or social circle are what decide who they spend time with and who they talk to, and often how much room they have to speak up. On social media this divide becomes even sharper, especially as algorithms keep people inside closed circles, where they mostly hear opinions that echo their own.<\/p>\n

In this reality, spaces where young people from different communities can meet around something they share are rare. This is exactly the gap Europe Houses are trying to fill. They run in Skopje, Tetovo, Struga, Bitola, Veles, Strumica and Kriva Palanka, creating meeting places where young people take part together in shared activities, regardless of who they are or where they come from.<\/p>\n

The idea is not for young people to gather just to talk about \"coexistence.\" Instead, they come together around something concrete, an activity, an idea, art, culture, a debate, a project or a problem they want to solve together. Europe House says this is exactly where their approach lies. Young people grow closer through what they have in common, not divided by what sets them apart.<\/p>\n

\"Europe House's mission is to bring young people together and help them connect through shared interests, ideas and challenges, rather than through their social, ethnic or religious background,\" Europe House says.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This approach opens the door to genuine encounters and encourages ongoing communication. The distance between different communities shrinks, and young people get to know one another, work together and, little by little, build mutual trust.<\/p>\n

A good example comes from the recent events<\/a> at Europe House Skopje and Tetovo, which Moll\u00ebkuqja had already covered.<\/a> At poetry evenings, young poets read in Albanian and Macedonian in front of a mixed audience. No one needed to explain why two languages belonged in the same room. The poetry did that on its own.<\/p>\n

Europe House often points to this moment as an example of how cultural activities can bring people closer, without turning ethnic or linguistic identity into the main point of the gathering.<\/p>\n

Physical spaces matter enormously, because face to face communication builds a different level of understanding and trust than what happens on social media. Online, young people are often exposed to like-minded groups, hate speech and content that highlights differences and divisions.<\/p>\n

\"When they meet in person, talk and work toward a shared goal, it becomes much harder to see one another only through stereotypes or differences. Europe House offers exactly that kind of environment, a space where different views can be expressed with respect and where disagreements can turn into dialogue, learning and cooperation,\" Europe House says.<\/p>\n

According to them, young people need more opportunities for regular, meaningful encounters, not just one off or formal activities.<\/p>\n

\"It's especially important that activities are accessible in different languages and open to young people from different towns, communities and social backgrounds,\" they say.<\/p>\n

The inclusion Europe Houses aim for doesn't stop at interethnic coexistence. A significant part of their work is also tied to gender equality, and this year that's especially in focus through the \"Wear the Change\" initiative, which launched on March 8 and continues throughout the year in different towns and regions.<\/p>\n

These activities speak openly about gender equality, creating spaces where girls and young women can express their views more freely, taking on a more active role in the community they live in.<\/p>\n

\"This way, we're creating an environment where young people, regardless of gender, ethnic background or where they come from, can feel equal, respected and included,\" Europe House points out.<\/p>\n

In the end, this is what Europe Houses in seven towns are trying to build. Not a space where differences are denied, but a place where they're no reason not to know one another.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
