One in four of the 208 total complaints of discrimination during the first 6 months of the year had ethnicity as their basis. But not only that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mostly, or 47% of the complainants report that the discrimination against them took place at the workplace. Discrimination was reported on over 22 grounds, while in 32 cases discrimination was confirmed to have occurred.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Commission that is supposed to prevent and punish discrimination, with limited powers<\/b><\/h4>\n

Kryesisht \u00e7far\u00eb ka n\u00eb dor\u00eb ky komision \u00ebsht\u00eb monitorimi dhe rekomandimi. \u00c7do qytetar ka t\u00eb drejt\u00eb t\u00eb parashtroj\u00eb ankes\u00eb nd\u00ebrsa komisioni duhet q\u00eb n\u00eb afat prej 60 dit\u00ebve t\u00eb jep mendim, n\u00ebse konstatohet shkelja, rekomandon m\u00ebnyr\u00ebn e heqjes s\u00eb shkeljes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only if this recommendation is not implemented can the commission file a request to initiate misdemeanor proceedings with another body, one that does not fall under the Anti Discrimination Commission but under the Ministry of Social Policy, Demography and Youth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fines that this commission can request range from 400 to 5,000 euros.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are serious concerns about the selection of members of the Anti Discrimination Commission\u00a0<\/b><\/h4>\n

The members of the Commission for Prevention and Protection against Discrimination are elected by the Assembly of North Macedonia. As a result, political coloring has often played a bigger role in their selection than actual skills or experience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We recall the viral interview with Xhihan Ahmed, who was nominated as a member earlier this year despite having no idea what the Istanbul Convention was; when asked about it, she spoke about Istanbul the city and the Atat\u00fcrk era.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She nevertheless, following public backlash, reflected on it and resigned.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A few months earlier, Mollekuqja revealed that the VLEN Coalition had decided to appoint journalist Ismail Sinani as a member of this commission, someone who in his public appearances had expressed views against feminism and the LGBTQ+ community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
